'New India in the 21st Century: 21 Visions for a Developed India by 2050' - a book by Dr Shishir Srivastava

New India in the 21st Century: 21 Visions for a Developed India by 2050 presents ideas and proposals that could have a positive effect on the development of the Nation as a whole.

During the last decade, India has exercised strong leadership both domestically and internationally. The visions mentioned in this book could further help steer India towards a ‘developed nation’ status.

The book represents the aspiration of Indians who wish to see their motherland revive its Ancient Glory. It also gives hope to the Indian diaspora and global citizens worldwide who wish to see India and Indians becoming prosperous and leading the world economically and spiritually.

It explores 21 key areas which are important for India’s overall development. Each chapter is divided into three sub-parts:

The first part traces the recent achievements of India while the second part elaborates on how India can harness its potential in certain areas to become a developed nation through the plan of action. The third part presents what the future of India will look like in 2050 if India continues to follow the plan of action laid out in the second part.

In a nutshell, this book presents a road map which explores
‘where we are coming from?’
and ‘what we have to do further on?’ as well as ‘where we are heading?’ and ‘how we can get there?’

I conceptualized this book in 2013 and over the last decade, India’s position has improved greatly and at present it is recognized globally. I was on a four-month study leave to do a short-term course in International Relations at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations (GSD) in Switzerland from February to May 2023.  During this period, I studied Global Environment Policies & Sustainability, Geopolitics and International Law.

Through this study, I gained exposure to lectures and special seminars conducted by eminent professors in Geneva. My professor in Geopolitics, Dr. Alexander Lambert, encouraged me to do a case study on ‘India Evolving as a Geopolitical Pivot’ and while I was researching for this case study, I thought of finally penning down this book.

As you go through this book, I hope that you will realize the possibilities that India can explore by harnessing its rich cultural roots combined with the strength of its massive youth population to achieve sustainable development in all spheres. We have many miles to go to attain excellence in the fields of education, scientific innovation and research; improve infrastructure; foster good Governance and also boost manufacturing and industry.

India's progress towards becoming a developed nation is driven by factors such as its demographic dividend, economic reforms, IT and services sector, education and skilled workforce, infrastructure development, manufacturing sector growth, entrepreneurship and start-up culture, social-welfare programs, renewable-energy infrastructure and global engagement.

To achieve equitable and prosperous growth, India needs to address disparities in sectors that lag. This can be accomplished by focusing on inclusive development in areas such as agriculture, rural development, education, healthcare, research and development, transparency in  governance, manufacturing growth, gender equality, science and technology, cultural preservation, global diplomacy, ease-of-doing-business, digitalization, defence and security, tourism promotion, sports and fitness and international collaboration.

To make India a developed country, every citizen must take responsibility to contribute the best towards their respective fields. By implementing strategies in the areas I suggest, India could realize its potential, become a developed nation and contribute to global progress and prosperity.
